Whether we’re truly passionate about our careers or working to pay the bills (or somewhere in between), we all have moments when we need to remind ourselves of what matters. Because finding purpose and meaning in our work is a vital part of our well-being, it’s important to reflect on the little things that bring us joy—starting with these five fulfillment boosters:
- Keep a gratitude journal. Start your workday with a few moments of gratitude, taking special note of feel-good highlights. The days—and years—have a way of slipping away; keeping a daily log can help remind you of the most meaningful and memorable moments throughout your career.
- Intentionally connect with someone each day. The connections we have with customers, clients, and co-workers have a huge impact on our social well-being. Intentionally asking someone about their day, offering a compliment, lending a hand, and letting someone know how much they mean to you are simple, yet rewarding, ways to connect.
- Consider your values and strengths. How might you share your unique talents more often? Maybe you value collaboration, which may lead to a new project with co-workers. Or, you shine at organizing, which you can incorporate into how you work with your team and the tasks you volunteer for. The idea is to parlay what you love—it’s likely to bring added meaning to your work and benefit your career.
- Track your accomplishments. It may sound simple, but keeping tabs on your results, successes, and proudest moments at work can remind you of the positives and the purpose behind your role. Look back on your favorite projects and personal highlights, as well as your team and organizational contribution—and reflect on what made each one special.
- Remind yourself of the bigger picture. Match purpose with meaning—or a personal calling. How does your work impact people on a larger scale? Even if your work role isn’t life-changing or rewarding every day, each one of us plays an important role in society. Reflect on—and take stock in—your company’s mission, vision, and values, and how they align with the person you are or aspire to be.
