In Central Oregon, more than 25 percent of pregnant women test positive for substances, such as alcohol, opioids, or marijuana. These women often feel ashamed and scared to ask for help out of fear that their baby might be taken from them. As a result, it’s difficult for these women to bring healthy babies into the world.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Moms program. This judgment-free program is specifically designed to help pregnant women who have issues with dependence on drugs or alcohol. The Moms program, which is a partnership between St. Charles Health System and BestCare treatment center, strives to provide care and rehab services, both during and after pregnancy.
“The program is designed to reach out to women who may not know where to go, who may be scared, who may feel ashamed, or who may be worried about legal issues,” explains Dr. Barbara Newman, St. Charles Medical Director for Women’s Services. “Our job is to make women healthy and make their babies healthy. We give women the resources to accomplish that. There the is no such place here for shame; there is no such place for being afraid. We’re here to help, and we understand.”
