Clearing up misconceptions about seasonal influenza (flu) and flu vaccines

Fall and winter are almost here. If you want to enjoy holiday gatherings and other fun activities, you’ll want to stay well. One of the best ways to do that is by getting a flu vaccine. Studies show that the flu vaccine helps slow the spread of the flu virus, and lessens the severity for those who do get it.

Yet many common myths keep people from getting vaccinated. Here are some key facts to help you make an informed decision.

Getting the flu can be serious—even deadly
For many people, the flu is similar to a bad cold. But flu can often be much more serious. The CDC estimates that during the 2021-2022 flu season, there were up to 170,000 hospitalizations and up to 14,000 deaths.

Flu vaccines are safe and effective
The flu vaccine has gone through the FDA’s thorough approval process. It’s proven to be safe and effective. New flu vaccines are released every year to keep up with rapidly adapting flu viruses. In fact, the flu vaccine can reduce your risk of catching the flu by up to 60%. And if you do get the flu, it will likely be less severe, so you’ll miss less work and stay out of the hospital.

The flu vaccine is recommended for nearly everyone
Current CDC guidelines recommend yearly vaccination against flu for everyone older than 6 months of age, including pregnant people.

Flu vaccines can’t give you flu
Flu vaccines cannot cause flu illness. Flu vaccines given with a needle (flu shots) are made with either inactivated (killed) viruses or with only a single protein from the flu virus.

Side effects are mild in most cases
You might feel a little sick for the first 24-48 hours. This is because your body is developing antibodies to the flu. This doesn’t happen to everyone and is usually very mild.

You can get your flu shot and COVID-19 shot or booster at the same time
Medical experts say it’s fine to get these vaccines at the same time if available. However, people who react strongly to the COVID vaccine or flu shot may want to wait a few days in between.
