Beyond the TableWhat food we choose to eat matters, but have you considered that nutrition habits can go beyond what we feed our bodies? Positive nutrition habits begin with our relationship and behaviors with food. National Nutrition Month (March) is a perfect time to pause and consider how our habits away from the table influence our choices at the table and set a foundation for a healthier, happier you.

8 positive beyond-the-table habits:

  • 1

Plan if you can. It is not always easy, but doing a little planning ahead can be a game changer. Not only does this help provide healthier choices, but also reduces stress, and can save you money and time in the long run.

  • 2

Consider environment. What does your surrounding look and feel like? A calm, clean eating environment may reduce distractions and increase connection to our foods. In a relaxed space, we are also more likely to chew more slowly, which improves digestion and helps us soak up all those good nutrients!

  • 3

Connect through shared meals. Use the time for eating as an opportunity for conversation and connection with your friends and family.

  • 4

Let go of being perfect and just do your best. We are not perfect and never will be, so relieve yourself of that pressure. Consider if you can make better choices, not perfect ones.

  • 5

Eat regularly. This helps you avoid overeating because it stabilizes blood sugar levels and gives your body a consistent supply of nutrients and energy.

  • 6

Use smaller plates and bowls to help you manage your portions effectively.

  • 7

Honor your body’s unique signals. We get busy, and to often just go through the motions of our day and forget to tune in to our body. Take just a moment to recognize your body’s hunger and fullness cues to decide how much and when to eat.

  • 8

Be present and grateful. Our bodies need good food to survive. Take a moment before you eat to be grateful for the nourishment it brings. Stay present and mindful of the flavors, smells, and textures each bite of food presents to you.
