We want to shine the spotlight on a company that is doing a tremendous job of implementing wellness in the workplace. G5 in Bend, Oregon, is a Premier Google Partner specializing in digital marketing for real estate companies. It has achieved an average customer retention rate of 94%, and for the fourth consecutive year, it’s been named one of Outside magazine’s Best Places to Work.
One of the things that’s made G5 so successful is it’s office culture. The culture is built around five core values they call the “Five to Thrive”: Dare to Delight, Make a Difference, Change the Game, Do the Right Thing, and Kill It. With these values at the center of the company, implementing health and wellness comes naturally in everything they do.
Here are just a few examples of what wellness looks like at G5:
- Community-supported agriculture (CSA): Through a partnership with a local CSA, G5 has boxes of fresh, local produce delivered to the office weekly. This provides employees with easy access to fresh vegetables to take home.
- Pet-friendly every day: At G5, every day is Bring Your Pet to Work Day—a company tradition since their doors opened in 2005. Having pets in the workplace helps increase employee engagement, happiness, and overall satisfaction. It allows for more opportunities to walk outside and get fresh air. Bringing pets into the office helps lower blood pressure and stress, while also encouraging employees to meet and interact with one another.
- Using challenges for team building: Throughout the year, G5 sponsors team challenges. In one recent challenge, the winning team received $500 to do an activity as a team. This builds community within the office, not only during the challenge, but afterward as well.
- Flexible schedules: G5 works to promote a work-life balance. One example is Summer Fridays, a program that allows employees to get off at 1:00 p.m. every Friday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. G5 also allows, with manager approval, employees to adjust their schedules to get out and move, such as playing a sport before or after work.
G5 has wellness embedded into its culture because of their passion to work hard and play hard. This feeds into everything they do as a company. As Dani Edgel, G5 People Advocate, says, “I’m obviously very passionate about health and wellness, but it’s also a core value of Dan Hobin, our CEO. It’s incredibly important to him. I feel like when you are healthy and happy, then everything else aligns.”
