No Shave November is here, and that means it’s time to take a serious look at men’s health. Men’s health has taken a back seat to a lot of other health causes. Because of this, our husbands, brothers, fathers, and friends are dying prematurely from heart disease, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues.
The Movember Foundation is bringing awareness to men’s health issues one mustache at a time. Mo bros and mo sistas join the mustachioed movement, ignore the razor, and fundraise during the month of November. Here are some of the biggest concerns in men’s health and what men can do to protect themselves.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death for men.
- Control your blood pressure and cholesterol by eating foods low in sodium and trans fat.
- Get your sweat on, and exercise often.
- Drop the smoke, and go tobacco-free.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men.
- Get screened, especially after the age of 45.
- Talk to your doctor to see if you should get a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening.
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men under 40.
- Learn how to do a self-exam.
- Know you risk factors, including family history and ethnicity-based risks.
Mental health and suicide prevention is a big deal.
About nine percent of men report daily feelings of anxiety or depression, but less than half of them seek treatment.Don’t tough it out, reach out to someone:
- A friend, family members, or a professional
- The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is open 24/7: 1-800-273-8255 (Press 1 for Veterans line)
