This past year, a PacificSource member reached out to us to see if we could help his seven-year-old daughter. She had a rare ear deformity that was visible and impacted her hearing. The situation was made more challenging as there was only one doctor in the region who could perform the very expensive type of surgery she needed and PacificSource does not have a provider contract with that surgeon.
In situations such as this, we always strive to do what we can to break down barriers and help our members the best way we can. For this particular case, our Health Services and Provider Network departments worked together to create a one-time contract with the surgeon so that our member’s daughter could get the surgery she needed at a much more affordable cost.
While the lower, in-network cost greatly reduced the family’s financial burden, the true benefit of this effort spanned far beyond money concerns—the surgery not only improved the child’s hearing and aesthetic of her ear, but also changed her self-conscious demeanor and bolstered her confidence.
Later, the surgeon’s office sent us this note:
“Thank you so much for working with us to take care of these little guys. We are changing their lives, and you are a part of this! I wish that you could see what I get to see. They come into the office with long hair over their faces and walking hunched over. In a short time they come back with cute haircuts and shoulders back, walking with confidence. They can hear and participate in class and group conversations.
It is a pleasure to work with you all.
Thank you.”
At PacificSource, we are one team working toward a common goal and we really do love what we get to do every day. But we love it, even more, when we are able to go the extra mile to make long-lasting, positive impacts for our members.
